Overview of the Podcast
Delegates at our recent convention ratified a resolution in support of organ donation. Giving the gift of life can take many paths. This path starts in Burlington Iowa with council 568.
Two members of this council were affected by the untimely death of children and the parent’s decision to share their child to give life to someone else.
Bill Brune Grand Knight walks us thru the events, how the council got involved and how tragedy turned into hope. Jackson Gipe, grandson of Warden John Van Pelt, battled leukemia. The Council stepped in to help establish a fund to help
Garrett Brockway was the son of Brother Knight Bruce Brockway. A freakish accident took his life at age 10. At the time of his untimely death, Garrett’s gifts of life – his organs – saved the lives of five people. In his honor and memory, the Garrett’s Path Foundation was born. The Brockway’s have also met and are now friends with some of those who benefited from Garett’s gifts.
I believe we should all feel inspired to support organ donors. Burlington Council and community has been inspired to do even more. Bill describes activities to raise funds and involve more people
Bill has been very successful at inspiring the council to become reinvigorated. The actions of the Council around helping these families – Out of the Depths — were selected the family service project of the year for Iowa. Read more about what was done at iowakofc.org
Pat Lyons is a former District Deputy. He recounts how much of a struggle leading 568 Burlington was at one time and compares that with today’s increased activity. Pat is enthused about living his faith and performing corporal and spiritual works of mercy with his brothers.
Membership growth fuels activity and activity attracts members. This formula is true for many organizations including the Knights. I had the opportunity to speak with Lou Barbour VP of membership growth for the Supreme Council.
I’ve known Lou for nearly 20 years. He does love the fraternal aspect of the Knights but is appreciative of our ability to focus a man’s faith and to bring out more than he thinks possible by himself.
Vince Leinen of Dow City attended convention in Coralville and we had a chance to speak briefly. Vince runs a ministry of caring for our elders and has done so for many years.
