Overview of the Podcast
Material from Supreme convention in Philadelphia PA with information, inspiration and invitation around the Knights of Columbus across this nation.
In September our Holy Father will visit Philadelphia for the World meeting of Families. The Knights will be involved with preparations and logistics for this visit. In preparation let us pray for the success of families and our Knight’s efforts.
The 133 Supreme convention opened Tuesday August 4th in the Philadelphia convention center with a majestic opening mass. Over 2000 people were in attendance to worship together and give witness to the importance of placing our faith in the forefront of our charity. For First timers the impact of Mass with so many of our Church’s hierarchy is memorable and exciting.
William Keiffert is the Grand Knight for St Alphonsus Davenport & St Peters in Buffalo. He earned the trip to convention due to his tremendous efforts growing his council by 500% of goal or 21 members.
I caught Bill after the Supreme Knight’s annual report for some reflections on what he had experienced so far.
Bill will receive a special award for his efforts in membership during the Wednesday awards session. We are very proud of Bill.
John Zweibahmer from Ossian Iowa is a first time attendee at Supreme convention. He is a new district deputy and has been preparing for his role serving as a district warden. I asked John to give us his thoughts on the convention experience prior to Tuesday’s opening Mass
John and I talk about some of the activities leading up to convention. Of course hospitality rooms to create and renew fraternal bonds is a key part of the convention experience but it’s not all fun and fraternity.
Monday morning delegates were encouraged to participate in a membership seminar where ideas were discussed regarding best recruitment and retention practices. Many knights spoke to recruitment as building and maintaining a personal relationship to a brother Knight. Others had creative programs and approaches to attract family men.
Jim Wiltshire of Indiana shares his successful techniques to make it personal.
Building Better fathers and better Husbands is part of the mission we embrace as Knights of Columbus. But there is more than one path to reach the end result. Jack Bidwell of new York shared with those present a recruiting technique which is working for his council.
I noticed Jack recognizes that to be a Knight is to stand together. None of us are as good as all of us together.
While I was leaving the first convention session I met Jim Betts PSD from Alaska. We struck up a conversation about his experience with the Knights.
It’s worth repeating – Alaska Knights led the order in volunteer hours per member at 95 hours each on average. That’s over two workweeks in volunteered time.
In this week’s Knights to Christ Entry Steve reflects on the better father theme and draws a connection between our prayer life and authentic fatherhood.
