This Week on Knight Life
College Knights make Iowa Proud! This week on Knight Life we explore college knights who give us perspectives on why they enjoy the Knights; why knights councils are unique among most campus service organizations and how Knights add value for college knights once they leave school.

Overview of the Podcast
Several weeks ago we aired a talk I gave on the occasion of the UNI council’s fifth anniversary in which I acknowledged their achievements on many fronts. Little did I know this council was about to be recognized nationally the Knights of Columbus for these activities! UNI college Knights have made Iowa Proud.
Past Grand Knight and current District Deputy for college councils Jonathan Langenburg was in attendance the week of October 2nd 3rd and 4th in New Haven CT. I reach him by phone and got some of the details of their awards.
I love that UNI Knights were able to pull off Panther Catholic Week. It’s not easy to be outwardly Catholic on a public university campus. This was the 50th college Knights convention. Like Jonathon I was in New Haven twice and stood in that very same St. Mary’s Church. I felt his excitement and recall that same sense of our order’s history while there.

Networking is a key outcome of the college convention. Being with like minded same aged catholic men enables this bond among young knights.
Jonathan names some key takeaways from the convention. Perhaps surprisingly stating the business case for young men to join the Knights.
Well there we have it – UNI Knights –Iowa Proud building young leaders for life in the Knights.

Iowa is privileged to have more than one active college council. Several weekends ago I visited Ames to attend the Msgr. James Supple Knights pancake breakfast.
While there I corned a couple of young Knights in the serving line and asked them about their experiences.
Being with people your own age while you are giving back is a key recurring theme – so is flexibility around busy schedules and other commitments.
David mentioned his friend Chris Hoffman who also serves as our state Knightline editor. Chris is from Sedalia Missouri and recalls joining the Knights at the same time as his own father. We talk about his current involvement and why that is important.
I really like that Christopher sees the value of not only giving back but of networking with men of faith – of any age and working toward common goals.
5 years ago Supreme Knight Carl Anderson gave 5 reasons to join the Knights to this same college convention. I think they still ring true today – college Knights or otherwise.
