Overview of the Podcast – Advent & Mercy
On December 8th the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary the Catholic Church begins an Extraordinary Julibee of Mercy. Pope Francis has proclaimed this Holy Year as “dedicated to living out in our daily lives the mercy” which God “constantly extends to all of us.”
After the Holy Door of St Peter’s is open on December 8, the Holy Doors of the other papal basilicas will be opened in subsequent days. As well, as a sign of communion of the whole Church, the pope has requested that every diocese in the world open a similar “Door of Mercy” for the local celebrations of the Jubilee.
Pope Francis has composed a special prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In the prayer, the Holy Father entreats the Lord to make the Jubilee of Mercy a year of grace so that the Church, “with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.” For more resources on celebrating this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy visit United States Catholic Conference of Bishops Jubilee Year link.
This week we invite Fr Bill Roush, parochial Vicar of Sts John and Paul in Burlington Iowa to lead us in this prayer.
Thank you Fr Bill for praying with us and for listening to God’s call to become a priest and serve His people.
After Mass at St Paul parish a couple kept watch by a table at the back of Church. Gary and Teresa Johnson were engaged in offering mass goers the opportunity to purchase religious art for their homes.
I spoke with Gary about his project and his involvement with the Knights
I encourage you to visit Lighthouse Catholic Media on the web to learn more or to get your own sacred art.
God’s mercy and justice have been part of the Christian story from the earliest days of the bible. We are all called to prepare well for God’s coming into our time and place during Advent.
I had the privilege of speaking to Paul Lee about his families Advent traditions. Paul is a young leader in the Knights who is currently serving both as State Warden and Program Director this year.
Paul & Amanda Lee are creating Catholic memories and traditions as a family in the context of the Knights of Columbus. As an interested listener consider sharing your own family traditions with us on our Facebook page IowaKnightsOfColumbus.
At the root of Knightly charity I believe lies gratitude to God for all he has done for us. And as God has done for us, so we in turn look to assist others in need spiritually and materially.
I return to Paul Lee and we discuss the importance of the Knights in his faith life and how to bring that to our Councils Meetings.
Discovering or deepening our Catholic Faith is an important goal for local councils. Sometimes we don’t do enough to bring that faith into focus in our meetings or activities. Holding myself accountable or better allowing my brother Knights to do that with me keeps us all on the right track.
One man I’ve admired for keeping his focus on helping others as a Knight is LeeRoy Goeden of Sioux City. I spoke with LeeRoy early in November outside of Mary’s Choice after we closed the 40 day vigil. We talk about his continued and changing involvement in helping others as a Knight and encourage his brothers with opportunities to do the same along side him.
I love LeeRoy’s enthusiasm for helping people. We invite you to join us as together we serve church, the needy and strengthen our faith.
Steve Hesprich gives us a vision of the right stuff quite different from what we might expect.
Advent is a good time to be available as a devoted family leader – serving the needs of his loved ones as a reflection of Christ’s love and mercy. We are the ones Christ has picked – are we willing to be available to do His will?

If you feel prompted to give something back and want to become more of the Catholic man you were created to be, join us as we make a difference serving our church, our communities and our families. Knights make it easy to give back.
I’m Mike Gaspers, thank you for listening. Feeling inspired? Then act courageously and with love to put your faith into action by word and by deeds.
