This Week on Knight Life – Ultrasounds
This week on Knight Life we focus on the difference ultrasounds make for men; the real point of using an ultrasound; and the tragedy that accompanies abortion.
Hello, I’m Mike Gaspers back with you for a half hour of information, inspiration and invitation around the activities of this band of brothers the Iowa Knights of Columbus.
This is Knight Life…our Mission is Be Men of Courage and to do everything with LOVE for our fellow man, woman, child and unborn child.
During this last week the Synod on the Family in Rome we offer the following prayer by Deacon Ray Rosburg for the Family.

Overview of the Podcast
This last spring the word went around that Mary’s Choice pregnancy clinic in Sioux City was in need of a new ultrasound machine. District Deputy Kerry Bressler took charge and contacted area councils who quickly raised the needed money and more. After all criteria were satisfied an application made its way to the Knights of Columbus Supreme office for matching funds in early August. Mary’s Choice would have their new ultrasound.
Ultrasound machines at pregnancy clinics are a game changer in the pro-life movement. Once a mother sees the baby growing in her and feels loving support around her she will have enough information to choose life for her child. See the Baby and you Save the Baby. Fathers are no exception to this – they are equally moved when they see the baby.
This past August I spent a few minutes with Sherril Glassmaker the director of Mary’s Choice talking about the difference this new ultrasound will make – and how she educates young men to be involved to save lives.
At the heart of this initiative is the Knights of Columbus Ultrasound program which seeks to provide this life saving equipment for every qualified pregnancy center. Local groups raise half the necessary funds and these monies are matched by the Supreme council after proper documentation is received. The effort is a partnership spearheaded by local Knights and supported at the highest level in the order
October 8th a new ultrasound was delivered to Mary’s Choice in Sioux City. Soon it will be in operation showing mothers to be the child they carry. Much work lies ahead but it seems appropriate to thank those many Knights from the Siouxland area who help collect the funds which made this new ultrasound possible.
The ultrasound delivered to Mary’s Choice is one of a group which brought the total number of ultrasound units installed since the program’s inception to 600 across this country – 9 of which are in Iowa: Sioux City, Mason City, Iowa City, Ames, Fort Dodge, Council Bluffs, Creston, Des Moines and a mobile unit “Charlie.”
When you recognize the baby within, you save the child. $1 a week or $52 saves one child. Donate today to save a baby’s life. Visit www.seethebaby.org to make your tax deductible secure donation. How many babies will you help us save?
Continuing with the theme of involving men I dip into our archives for a conversation with Rachel Owens of Informed Choice from July 2013. As I note in the conversation I was not yet a grandfather. This week I’m a third time grandfather and understand completely that feeling of protectiveness for a daughter and a new born child.
Knights support various clinics around our state. Inner Visions in Des Moines announced to Knights last week the 318th documented baby saved since they’ve been open and doing ultrasounds for at risk women. Jenny Condon has been instrumental in guiding Inner Visions. I asked her about her work there after the Iowa Knights See The Baby kick off committee meeting.
On seeing twins the father was so excited – Ultrasounds and dedicated men and women committed to showing mothers and fathers this window into the womb make all the difference. Where would the Knights be without these amazing women who stand on the front line of saving lives at our pregnancy clinics?
Sadly not women or men are given this opportunity and the outcome is tragic. We return to a personal witness by Rachel from 2012.
It is for me easy to enter the pain in her story and yes let it drive us forward to do all we can to make good information and options available everywhere we can in our communities. Our efforts must go beyond ultrasounds and clinics however. We must work together to build a network of resources that are known and available when and where they are needed most. Our young people must know will love them and offer life affirming options when they are needed.
Statistics suggest a large number of abortions happen with college age women. A couple of years ago I visited with Rachel about ways in which we can address this reality.
Rachel gives us plenty to think about – we don’t have all the answers because none of us are perfect. We’ve formed a planning committee to surface the best ideas, share and put them into action saving lives. Life is not perfect, far from it but Life is precious to God, to Knights and to parents given the chance. It’s our commitment to each other and to our families
These reasons are some of the keys to the creation of the Iowa Knights Ultrasound initiative and our goal to reduce abortions significantly across our state.
