Overview of the Podcast – Delegate Fraternity
A Light to the Nations. This was the theme for the 2016 Supreme Convention held in Toronto. Conventions by their nature can be a light to those in attendance – many of whom return multiple times to renew fraternity with other delegates. Attendee delegates are sprinkled with an abundance of first timers learning the ins and outs of convention while making new friends. While there were many inspiring addresses, homilies and liturgies I am focusing this week on some of the Knights and their families I met while at Convention. Surprisingly I met at least three delegates from three jurisdictions with Iowa connections. I was not able to interview all of them.
An unlikely connection introduced himself during hospitality on Monday afternoon. A tall lanky man with a big grin greeted me. As soon as he heard I was from Iowa, Thomas Thorn of Nevada related to me his memories of the family farm and visits to his Grand Parents in the Cedar Rapids area
I was surprised at how many Polish speaking folks were in the Vegas area and am encouraged that Tom is planning to reach out to them. Another brother and State Secretary with Polish ancestry Tom Kalisz from Arizona is working to do the same with Polish round tables in the Phoenix area.
I was introduced to another couple while waiting in the registration line. Soon we discovered common friends in the Murphy’s of Billings. Zane and Janelle are from Lewiston Montana and most recently chaired the Montana State convention.
Janelle shared with me more on how their sons are involved with statewide events for Catholic youth and how important that is for their family.
Both Zane and Janelle are excited about the opportunities in the Knights to Live the Works of Mercy as an expression of faith.
This is Mike Gaspers for the Knight Life. We have been talking with delegates from Nevada and Montana about their experience at the Supreme Convention and in the Knights.
I invite you to learn more about the Supreme Convention by visiting www.kofc.org/convention where you will find information on how to be involved. Last year you may recall our own Bill Keiffert from Davenport council 15853 was a guest of Supreme at the Philadelphia convention. Bill was chosen by lottery from among the many multiple Star Council Grand Knights.
During Monday evening’s pin exchange I made the acquaintance of a young Grand Knight from Brooklyn New York who was one of this year’s selected guests.
James Nania was figuring out the whole convention routine with the help of a number of brother Knights. I visited with James and Rachelle about the path through the Knights that led them to Toronto
James gave me some great insights into leadership; but mostly I was interested in how the council leadership reeled James in by gently inviting him to help in small ways at first. Invite and keep on inviting.
This is Mike Gaspers and you are listening to the Knight Life show where each week we strive to tell the story of the Iowa Knights from an insider’s point of view. We’ve been listening to James Nania from Brooklyn, NY relate his climb to recognition as one of the order’s top Grand Knights with the help of his wife Rachelle.
This week’s Knights to Christ reflection revolves around attending to your wife’s needs as a key to a happy life.
